Hermanus is an amazing place.
It was actually the first place I ever experienced in South Africa, setting a pretty high bar for the rest of the country.
This sleepy city has the smell of the sea year-round, and a host of wildlife including seals, otters, sharks and whales putting on a show throughout the year. In fact, Hermanus is most famous for the Southern Right Whales, who come to the bay in droves during the September mating season.
I haven’t seen the whales - yet. But, I’ve seen enough of the majestic mountains and seaside stretches to fall fully in love with this city. Our favourite place is Langbaai, where the sea is rough and thrilling, if you can bear the freezing temperature. It’s great out of the water too, and can turn into a full-on club scene during sundowners.
Luckily, Hermanus is only about an hour and a half away from Cape Town, so we get there pretty regularly. Heading there on Thursday in fact, for Easter weekend. Beachgoers, beware!
